People ?? Are ?? Watching??

People ?? Are ?? Watching??

Short post, important message:

Social media is not "Likes, Comments, and Shares"

Those three things...so important to so many people...are sawdust. They're the afterthought to what REALLY happens on social media.

80% of social media videos are watched without sound. Maybe you knew that...but here's why that matters:

- The sound doesn't start playing unless you click on the video. But the video plays passively in the newsfeed. Therefore, the vast majority of your video views are PASSIVE, IN-FEED views.

Why does that matter?

Because it proves my next point:

People LURK. People WATCH. Social media is primarily a SILENT, PASSIVE CONSUMPTION BASED PLATFORM.

When I make a post like this one, I'm not writing to get Likes or Comments. Those Likes and Comments are important to my ACTUAL goal, which is to have as many people read the post as possible.

When you publish on social media...whether it's Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram...you should be publishing to the Unseen - Unheard - Silent, Passive Observer.

Why?

Let me put it this way:

Over 50% of my new students for each mentorship program I run have NEVER 'Liked, Commented, Shared, or Messaged' me prior to asking for information on the program.

In short...they were lurkers.

They were reading my posts, watching my videos, and scoping me out.

And then, when their timing was right...they invested thousands of dollars to work with me.

If all I cared about were Views, Likes, Comments, and Shares...I'd be extremely unhappy and unsuccessful by my own measurements.

But instead, I write every post...even this one...knowing that the vast majority of the people who will read it will never react to it...but they WILL get value from it.

And that's what matters.

I love the people who lurk. I'm one of them...most of my social media time is spent silently scoping people out. I read comments, I read content, I watch videos in-feed. Rarely will I interact.

Oh...and if my words aren't enough to convince you...

You can test this yourself.

Go ahead and do two things.

#1 - Watch a video you wouldn't normally watch in your 'Watch' Tab on FB. Let it run. Keep it on screen. Let it finish and suffer through the stupid interrupt ads.

Then, measure how many videos similar to it you get in the next 72 hours.

My guess? You'll see between 3-10x more content similar to that video you've never watched before.

Because FB knows what its game is. That's why reactions and comments don't get the same level of boost they used to. They aren't as important to show OTHERS...they're important data for the INDIVIDUAL who likes/comments/shares.

It's less about virality, and more about relevance now.

Oh, and #2 - Go 'unfollow' certain pages, but keep others that are like them. 'unfollow' NFL and click 'don't show me this' on their video...and then see if you still get football content at all.

My guess? You'll see a dramatic decrease in any football content at all.

This is how I cleaned my feed from political nonsense and memes. It's how I stay sane with 3500+ friends.

So...

Does this help you?

If you comment 'Yes', then FB will keep showing you my stuff. Which is awesome.

But if you've read the entire thing and not commented...they'll still show you my stuff. ??

People are watching. Act...and publish...accordingly.
