Edge computing in today’s world is one of the most effective methods of processing a vast amount of data. Also, it is a cost-effective post establishment of the entire process and faster. For industries that prevail on huge data, this process acts as a boon for them. Edge Computing one of the most versatile technologies being followed in the organizations, enterprise premises, homes, automobiles areal flyers, ships, intelligence agencies, business .Edge computing in telecom, often referred to as Mobile Edge Computing, MEC, or Multi-Access Edge Computing, provides execution resources (compute and storage) for applications with networking close to the end users, typically within or at the boundary of operator networks. Edge computing can also be placed at enterprise premises, for example inside factory buildings, in homes and vehicles, including trains, planes and private cars. The edge infrastructure can be managed or hosted by communication service providers or other types of service providers. Several use cases require various applications to deployed at different sites. In such scenarios a distributed cloud is useful which can be seen as an execution environment for applications over multiple sites, including connectivity managed as one solution. The main benefits /uses of edge solutions include:-
- Low latency .High bandwidth, Device processing, Data off load, Trusted computing/storage, Video analytics, Location services, Internet-of-Things, Augmented reality, Optimized local content distribution and, Data caching.
1. Definitions & Terminologies of Edge computing. In a simple language is a process in which all the data from the internet supported devices is collected and before sending all the data to a larger warehouse some of the important or crucial information is analyzed in a nearby source. As per the definition of Edge computing, it is the processing of analyzing the data at the edge of the corner of the network before the data is sent to the larger processing center. Few examples which benefit from it are hospital where patient monitoring is done by a third party cloud with this technology earlier and faster processing is possible. Another important area that benefits from edge computing is traffic Management. There are a few terms which one needs to understand for getting a better understanding of Edge computing:-
- Edge Cloud.is formed which in simpler terms is a smaller warehouse located near the end or edge of the network so that the required data processing can be easily done.
- Edge Cloud Computing.it is the process or distributed paradigm wherein the smaller data warehouses are created at the source where the data is needed on a priority basis. So in the case of a vast network, the areas requiring immediate data can be easily provided.
- Edge Network. It is a network that helps to get that data decentralized to the edge cloud, this network uses special branch routers and edge routers so that the movement of the data from the internal and the external sources becomes easier.
- Edge Computing Application.in non-technical terms, it is the application that helps us to get fast and effective data analysis for areas in need and also stores all the voluminous data in the big warehouse. This process helps to provide effective results in some of the industries using this technology are hospitals, Industrial machines, Smart Homes, etc.
- Edge Security.It is an important aspect wherein the data which moves from the source to collection house and back with the analysis, that data needs to be protected and should move through security lines.
- Edge Device.In a simpler term, it is the device located at the entry point of the edge cloud where the data gets entered and analyzed further.
- Edge technology.in simpler terms, it is the technologies, techniques which are used by the IT experts so as to fulfill the requirements of the final users.
- Network Edge.it is the point where the network of the data provider connects to the third party, as simple as a WAN cable can also be said as an example of Network Edge.
2. Edge computing is the Process wherein the data gets collected at a nearby source of the internet-based devices so that the data can be easily processed and there is no delay in receiving the analyses of the data from the central data collection warehouse which could be at a faraway distance from the user. This process thus helps in creating an easier way of processing the edge work and creates a good platform for its performance. The platform for processing that edge cloud is more on the lines of cloud computing and hence the technology uses the same baseline for usage and data processing.
- Mobile Edge Computing. One of the most important types of Edge computing is Mobile Edge computing, details slightly later?
Cloud Computing. In nontechnical words, it is the service and delivery of computing to users which helps them to attain their data from any authentic source and can use their data at any point from anywhere around the world. Using the same concept an Edge Cloud computing has been formed or the experts are trying to use that to avoid only delays and provide cost-effective data services to its users all around the world.
3. Advantages .. Effectiveness: With cloud servers, the data analysis is delayed and loses on its effective portion, with the new technology the real-time data analysis and data saving is easily met.,,.Easy to Maintain: since the servers are available nearby their maintenance can be easily done….Cheaper Cooling: With the big server rooms and data warehouses cooling has to be done on a continuous basis so that the machines can easily work, with the smaller data warehouses and closer by the cooling expenses can be drastically low. …Climatic supportive: with bigger warehouses, the climatic changes get affected by the heat and radiations this can be changed into effective means with small centers for data collection.
4 .Disadvantages ….High usage of power: with a bigger data collection center high power is required for it to function smoothly but with the smaller data collection centers providing that amount of power and to a remote location can become a challenging aspect……Legal drawbacks: when a data center is created to collect data from the customer it has to have a backing of a lot of legal formalities and a procedure, creating all the same for the smaller centers is a difficult task on its own self…Only Data Analyses: with the big data center they not only analyze the data but also store them for further usage, these small data centers are only for data analyses not for storage hence increasing the cost for the setup In totality….Security Challenges: with the huge amount of data available security needs to be very particular and strong but with a lot of smaller centers, the security aspect cannot be easily guaranteed.
5 .A market of edge cloud computing emerging from 2016, it continuously grows up as a most helpful hand for humanity throughout the world.Multi Access Edge Computing is a growing and emergent technology system that works with the host having content for the edge of the network. It helps in the promotion of various technological growth features like wireless computing and devices for the ease of users. It hands over massive IoT devices with the 5G networks for both commercials as well as industrial uses. Taking a thematic example for understanding the use of edge computing, if a massive fire broke out at an office, then the MEC sends an alert through cloud computing and automatic alert to the fire departments and other police offices nearby.
6. MEC. In simpler terms, it is defined as the collection of all the data from the mobile services of the users and provide a smaller, closer and effective data warehouse which can help the customers to get real-time analysis. This computing uses the It severs on the cellular network of the service providers so as to get the required data.For mobile edge computing to be effective Edge Data plays a very important role, Edge data is a data system which is used over and above the mobile networks and it works three times faster than the original mobile networks.Multi Access Edge Computing allows the computation of traffic of internet and data services with the help of a centralized cloud-like system at the network edge. This edge computing first creates, analyze, process and stores the data which is transmitting through it before sending it further. Less the distance of the customer with this cloud or network device, more efficiently data transmits from one place to another in less time.
7. MEC Characteristics. Edge computing network works on the MEC multi access network system. Being a trending and one of the most popular networks, some of the factors benefits the MEC over the other networks. These are:
- New services and new revenue streams
- Real-time analytics with lower latency
- Reduced cloud data storage and transport costs
- Improved availability of applications and IT assets
- Conserve network bandwidth and reduce network congestion
- Strengthen security and compliance
- Proximity, high bandwidth, and virtualization have added importance like a cherry on the top of the cake.
- At the moment, the existing internet of things systems perform all of their computations in the cloud using data centres.
8. Key drivers for MEC.The latest intelligent networks like 3 G, 4 G, and 5 G networks, IoT networks, i.e., the internet of things are some of the edge computing devices that act as the key drivers. These intelligent and more advanced networks gained popularity among the people and are covering much more countries and the larger areas, which automatically attracts large traffic to the edge computing devices.With the emergence of technology, people also want to access the latest technologies, which can be possible by multi access edge computing(MEC) services. These networks not only increase the traffic from individual enterprises or large business tycoons throughout the world but also help in increasing flexibility and access to the MEC in sharing a high volume of data. Edge computing devices also time to time, introduce various innovative ideas for the development of network bandwidth and its durability.
9. MEC Uses.Multi access edge computing is being used by various business organizations dealing in different purpose commercial and industrial sectors to promote their existing actions by improving their own customer engagement and environment of the network. Some of the areas where MEC and edge computing would be used are…Customer Services. Augmented & Virtual Reality.. Commercial Operations. Industrial IoT…Emergency Services.Many experts also believe that the true potential of edge computing will become apparent when 5G networks go mainstream in a year from now. Users will be able to able to enjoy consistent connectivity without even realizing it.Having the potential of being quick, future technology-enabled with localized solutions makes it more common for the use meanwhile during an environmental epidemic situation. For example, it can be used as an alarming and alert message sending system in a building or in a wi-fi-laced locality if a major fire may occur without any human intervention and automatically sends a quick response to the fire department. This feature also makes edge computing more
10.The Future of Mobile Edge Computing. Mobile edge computing is still a emerging market. Its association with 5G and telcos’ unique ability to support mobility, combined with significant longer-term potential size of the applications (AR/VR, drone control etc) make MEC of strategic interest to Telcos. In order to capture future growth opportunities in MEC, telcos must build propositions in more than one area, where synergy will help drive an incremental benefit. This could be done through working with real customers across edge domains and identifying common requirements across use case domains, and also collaborating with customers to focus on defining business models. Moreover, there are some key questions that telcos should ask themselves to enhance the benefits of MEC:
- What are my existing areas of strength, and can MEC help augment these?
- How can I align my chosen business model with my existing customer base and network infrastructure?
- How many use cases can my MEC infrastructure support?
- How easily can I implement a given business model?
What is my appetite for risk? It’s likely that many telcos will take a modular approach in the short term, adopting a complementary business model for an initial deployment, expanding into further areas as demand becomes clearer and technology starts to prove its efficacy.
