People at Statista

Hi Dustin! Let’s start from the very beginning. Would you like to give us a quick introduction on who you are and what your role at Statista is?

Sure, I am Dustin and I have been working as an analyst at Statista for two and a half years now. At Statista, we also have our own brand, which you can see on my hoodie. The "R" basically stands for rankings, and our goal is to make transparent which company or brand is the best in a certain area.

We are currently at our Hamburg headquarters. What is the first thing you do when you arrive at the office?

That's easy. Usually, I check my messages and emails first, and then I grab a black coffee. I also really enjoy the view we have on the 8th floor; we can pretty much see all the beautiful buildings Hamburg has to offer. If the sun decides to come out, you can see the sunrise over the “Elphi” and the “Michel,” which is awesome.

Why did you join Statista?

During my master's studies in International Economics, I already worked a lot with data, which was a great connection to Statista. For my master's thesis, for example, I used a huge panel dataset to estimate the impact of China's growing high-speed rail system on how companies change their business between connected cities. Statista is data-driven, and its products are fact-based. So, it was convincing for me to move to Hamburg and join this company.

What is some advice you would give your younger self?

Do what you are interested in, but also challenge yourself with things you want to get better at. For example, I was always sure I would never play volleyball because I was not confident enough in my skills, but now I do, and I enjoy it a lot and it’s good fun. I actually started because there are a lot of team members that play volleyball and they kind of convinced me.

What is the best part about your job?

I mean, we are not a small company anymore, but Statista still has a young and diverse team, a great office in the city center, and we are always open to new ideas. We are not standing still; we want to grow, and one way to do that is to optimize our processes. For example, in our analysis, we can make things more efficient through automation. When I had an idea to do things differently, I was always given the opportunity to try new things. And if you are motivated to do that, then it's a great place to work because you can implement your own ideas.

Tell us something about your team.

My team lead, Wenke, has been with Statista for ten years and brings a lot of experience to the team. She is really the one who has the best overview of what is going on and keeps everyone working effectively, while also having fun. As for the team, we are very diverse and have colleagues from all over the world. We also have lots of different topics, for example, the “World’s Best Banks” that we do together with Forbes or the “Climate Leaders in the Asia Pacific Region” that we do with the Financial Times. With two of my other colleagues, Michael and Eike, we like to challenge ourselves with table tennis, which we can play on our floor.

Do you have a podcast or book recommendation?

I am a big fan of “The Economist” because they give you more detailed information on what is going on economically and politically in our globalized world. They have a bunch of excellent podcasts, but I think I can best recommend you the Daily Podcast “The Intelligence”.

If someone asked you if they should apply for a job at Statista, what would you say?

You should definitely apply for the job. If you like to deal with data, it is a great place to work. At the same time, in my case, I also get to learn how to manage and lead a project in a very international and diverse environment.
