People at Statista
Hi Basti! Let’s start from the very beginning. Would you like to give us a quick introduction on who you are and what your role at Statista is??
Hey, I'm Basti. After a few years as a graphic designer in various advertising agencies in Berlin, I joined Statista 1.5 years ago. Over the past seven years, I've gained extensive experience in marketing, websites, campaigns, and out-of-home advertising. At Statista Media, I work specifically as a Design & Data Storytelling Expert for social media. Together with the Creative Content Team and other designers, we have expanded and standardized our channels visually while strengthening their content. My focus is on enhancing our social media channels by combining creative content with innovative design, delivering engaging and impactful content.?
?
How would you explain your job to a child??
Explaining numbers and making them beautiful.?
?
Why did you join Statista??
I wanted to do something meaningful and impactful, and I was drawn to Statista's mission and the concept behind their social channels. They aim to provide valuable content, data, and information, allowing people to form their own opinions. I saw great potential to enhance this visually, making it more engaging. Starting as a freelancer, I eventually transitioned to a full-time role. While advertising agencies offer valuable learning experiences, I often didn't feel represented in terms of content. However, the idea behind Statista, especially its channels like newsletters, social media, and now the app, is both graphic and content-related work that truly benefits and educates people.?
?
In April this year you started the “Expert Track” as a career opportunity within Statista, what motivated you to do so??
I initiated it because I believe in the significance of maintaining a strong and consistent visual and content presence on our social media channels. Data tells stories, and the way these stories are understood often depends on design. I am motivated to continue expanding this knowledge and sharing it within Statista with anyone interested.?

What's your biggest learning from the journey so far??
The journey is just beginning, and one lesson has become abundantly clear: listening is key. All the departments at Statista collect very interesting data and facts, but only if you talk to the people who collect and analyze them and provide opportunities for interpretation, you can tell a story.?
?
Has anything changed in your job??
I am already noticing that the cooperation between Statista Media and other departments is becoming much stronger and that we are also being asked for our expertise. There’s a lot more appreciation when you're in meetings or discussions.? In addition, there are a lot of trainings provided by Statista University, many of them for personal development. The expert track is an excellent way to deepen your understanding of Statista and yourself, and to further our goals with this expertise.?
?
What was your most exciting or fun moment at Statista??
I think it was five weeks after I started when I joined my first team event, which was ice stock sport (curling) here in the park. It was quite strange at first since I had been working from Berlin and didn’t know many colleagues, only some of the designers. Suddenly, I found myself on an ice field with a lot of Glühwein, curling away. Surprisingly, I was better at it than I expected, and it turned out to be a lot of fun.?
