People at Statista
Hi Basil! Let’s start with a quick introduction. Can you tell us who you are and what your role at Statista is??
Hi! I’m Basil. I’m originally from Japan but moved to Long Island when I was about 3, then to New York City. I went to school for economics, and funny enough, I met two of my current coworkers there, which helped me get this job. I just started as an Account Manager at Statista. Before that, I was an SDR (Sales Development Representative) here, but I was lucky enough to make the transition recently.?
How would you describe your job to a child??
I’d say it's a "top of the funnel" job. That means I help my team find new companies to work with. I focus on universities, so I find the right people to talk to, usually librarians, and help connect them with our account executives. After that, I try to build relationships by reaching out to professors or administrators.?
You mentioned meeting your coworkers while studying economics. What else brought you to Statista??
Yeah! I’ve had previous roles prior to Statista where the culture wasn’t great and work-life balance was never there. I actually dreaded going to work every day. I kept in touch with two former classmates, Xheni and Esther, and they always talked about how much they loved Statista—the culture, the people, everything. So, I reached out and asked if they were hiring. I already knew a bit about Statista from my previous job, and after talking to Marianne, who had such a bubbly personality, and Tiger, who really sold me on the culture, I was all in.?
How did Statista help you transition from SDR to Account Management??

They were super supportive. Usually, SDRs transition to Account Executive or Customer Success Manager roles, but early on, I knew I was more interested in account management. Kevin Maier, who I met during onboarding, got me really interested in it, and I started talking to more account managers to learn the ropes. My former manager, Marianne, was always pushing me to go for it, even though it wasn’t the typical path, and that support really helped me make the leap.?
How have your coworkers and managers supported you during this transition??
It’s been great! I've been splitting my time with account management work while still handling SDR tasks, but I wanted to go above and beyond and push myself to really learn the new role so I'd put in extra effort. Marianne has been so supportive with assisting me in any way possible. My current manager, Simon, has also been really helpful — hopping on calls and guiding me through the day to day work. My peers have always taken the time to walk me through things and allowed me to bounce ideas off of them (special shoutout to Victor and Anto!).
What’s the best part of your job??
Honestly, it’s the people. That’s the main reason I love working here. The culture is amazing, and I’ve made some lifelong friends, even with people who’ve left the company. I’ve never been this excited to go to work every day. Plus, I really believe in what Statista does. It’s great to see the value we bring to schools and businesses, so the work is fulfilling too.?
If someone asked if they should apply for a job at Statista, what would you say??
I’d say absolutely! I’ve already referred a couple of people. It’s a great place to work, and it keeps getting better. The environment here is amazing. Honestly, it’s the happiest I’ve been in my adult life. If you’re thinking about applying, I’d say do it right away before someone else gets ahead of you!?
