People at Statista

Hi Jina White ! Let’s start from the very beginning. Would you like to give us a quick introduction to who you are and what your role at Statista is??

I’m Jina, I started working in Statista Media about two years ago as a Junior Social Media Editor and now I’m the Creative Content Producer for the same team. I started my position by managing and strategising for our social media channels including diversifying our reach and creating static content. And now, whilst I still do this, I also largely focus on creating new social media formats for audience engagement, and I also work with other departments to promote their content or products in a way that’s engaging for our social media audiences.

You are originally from Australia – what is it like for you to work and live in Germany?

To be honest I think the corporate world in western countries can be pretty similar so it’s not a huge difference. Statista is an international company and the corporate language is English, so whilst there are some differences, I still think it feels quite comfortable to adjust in this environment. However, something I had to wrap my head around is that I see that the Australian work culture has much faster pace. For example, the way I see it, here in Germany many young adults value learning via experiences which is why so many do a gap year before going to Uni. Then at Uni, I’ve noticed that many study for longer and do a master’s if possible. In Australia, it’s very common to go straight into uni once you graduate high school, and then after 3 years of studying towards a bachelor’s degree, most go straight into the workforce, so you could still be very young and already in the middle of your career progress. In terms of living, Australia is known to be very chill, but in terms of ‘slow living’, I think German prioritises it more.

In terms of your career, what is the most important thing you’ve learned so far??

One of the most important things for me, especially with working in social media, is that you need to diversify your skills and the range of things you can do. Working in social media requires you to do a bit of everything; You’re doing research on what topics you want to cover, you’re strategising and overseeing analytics to see who your audiences are and if what you’re doing for them is successful. Then you’re also thinking of new formats and producing them alone or as part of a team. So, right now I’m currently extending my skills towards learning proper video production and video/sound editing. I think with socials changing so quickly it’s become an expectation to be a well-rounded person who can pick up different skills and put them together.

What is the best part about your job??

I love being creative and that I’m given the opportunity to do just that. I love being able to sit down and think about what topics we want to cover or what new format we want to create, working with departments to promote their product, a person or tool and how we can tell this story to our audiences in the most enticing way possible, because when you scroll on socials you want to come across content that sparks your interest.

Tell us something about your team.?What makes it special?

One of the biggest things is that we as Statista Media can present data in a very appealing way. Normally when you’re thinking of data and statistics, you’re thinking of a hundred-page report with one or two graphics, but our team really likes to focus on presenting data in a way that is easy to grasp and digest. We’re keen on data visualization. From the social media/creative content team perspective I love that we give each other the opportunity to just go for it. We pitch each other ideas of matters we want to work on, and we really support one another to just do it. And if things don’t work out, we either refine it or drop it but there’s no hard feelings about it.

If someone asked you if they should apply for a job at Statista, what would you say??

I would say go for it. Social Media is fun here at Statista. As I said we’re given the opportunity to be creative and have fun with what we do. Working in social media doesn’t have to be sitting behind a computer all day, you can come into the office and film, meet people from across Statista, do interviews, and be behind the scenes or ‘on stage’ on film sets if this sparks your fancy.

You are up for a new challange and what Jina told us sounds just right for you? Apply now and join the team!
