People Quit People, Not Companies ?– John C. Maxwell
Most of my friends and colleagues know that one of my passions in business is leadership training and development. I have coached and taught leadership principles for the past 15+ years.
My ongoing theme this week has been to refresh my leadership skills by re-reading several leadership books. One is from my friend and mentor, John C. Maxwell. His book, Leadership Gold is packed full of 26 leadership lessons that will help anyone become a better leader?
Here is one for today –Lesson #16: People Quit People, Not Companies. In this chapter, he references 4 main reasons people quit companies. When he says, “quit people” that means quit the leader or leadership that is in place.
Take in mind this is not talking about the natural turnover where people leave due to goals changing, life changes, etc. This is also not talking about the perpetual disgruntled team member who doesn’t get along with anybody – some people just need to go for the health of the team or organization. John quoted a line from Oscar Wilde: “Some people cause happiness WHEREVER they go, some people cause happiness WHENEVER they go.”?Be the Wherever type of person.
Here are the 4 Main Reasons People Quit Companies:
1.????People quit people who devalue them.
2.???People quit people who are incompetent.
3.???People quit people who are insecure.
4.???People quit people who are untrustworthy.
Based on my experience, I think the one I have seen most often is quitting due to an un-trustworthy leader.?John sites a survey on the 5 Ways Leaders Lose Trust – here they are:
1.????Acting inconsistently in what they say and do.
2.???Seeking personal gain over shared gain.
3.???Withholding information.
4.???Lying or telling half-truths.
5.???Being closed minded.
Are you being the Wherever Leader? Bring happiness to wherever you go and people will stay with you for the season!
