A Poem a Day: People of Love
People of Love

When friends ask how you are and walk away
Needing encouragement but don't get it anyway
You pour your heart and tears just won't stop
But getting nothing more than a simple thumbs-up
Remembering the joy when you used to hang out
Now everyone has no time, always moving about
So busy, doing things indispensably important
Like checking FB, Instagram. and filtering SnapChat
I wished to hear a kind word when I went to church
But got another comment about my weight instead
Shared my thoughts and feelings but as I expect
I was left alone mid-sentence, talking to myself
Then a wonderful truth lifted my soul like a dove
We're to be a people of love not just people who love
The light, the salt of the earth, said Jesus my Lord
The change, Gandhi said, we want to see in the world
Loving our enemies or at least people we don't like
Is a pill that's hard to swallow but must follow despite
Anger, hurt, and bitterness even from close people we know
True lasting healing can happen if we learn to let go
