People of Interact: Tom Walters

This month as part of our 'People of Interact' series, we speak to Head of Architecture, Tom Walters.

Tom talks about his pioneering work on Interact's new and groundbreaking block editor, his journey into Engineering, and his cheffing prowess (watch out salt bae - there's a new culinary king of memes in town).

How would you describe yourself in 3 words????

Thomas James Walters.

Ok, Ok: Optimistic, Focused, Curious.

What/ who inspires you????

What: The natural world, and specifically how interconnected all natural processes are. There’s so much beauty in every part of nature, you just have to stop and look.

Who: Anyone who is at the top of their craft. Watching expert chefs, film-makers, or writers strive to create excellence to the exclusion of everything else.

What does your day-to-day look like????

My day-to-day is fairly varied (which keeps life interesting) but I spend most of my time working closely with our Engineers on technical challenges and working with the team on product ideas.

Tell us about your background... ??

I started building websites and apps for people while I was still in school, and continued freelancing throughout college/uni.

After graduating, I started out at a digital agency, working with customers of all shapes and sizes. My first couple of years were spent building websites and mobile apps, before moving into consultancy and sales. I worked across the entire project process – from customer acquisition, tenders (not the deep-fried kind, unfortunately), on-boarding/ discovery, and implementation.

I then joined Interact in September 2020!

What are the best things about your job????

I get to work with the brightest and most optimistic bunch of people I’ve ever met. I feel very lucky to come to work each day to work on complex problems for huge customers, with such a talented team, from whom I can learn so much.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on at Interact????

Our new Block Editor has been my adoptive child while here at Interact – so it has to be that. We’ve reimagined what a content editor can be and delivered something which is truly best-in-class.

Having worked with so many content management systems over the years, I know we’ve created something really special with this project and I can’t wait to see what our customers build with it.

I grew up in the kitchen, so I’m big into cooking – experimenting with ingredients and doing my best to make dishes sing. There’s nothing better than being around the dining table with friends and family, and when I’m not there, I’m usually at the pub.
