People Don't Leave Companies, They Leave Lousy Management

People Don't Leave Companies, They Leave Lousy Management

David just escaped from a full-time job in a toxic work environment where the best employees quit, and the worst people got promoted to management jobs. The people with all the ideas were shunned and pushed aside; they soon left the organization while the tush-kissers with no plans got promoted.

The harder David worked, the worse he got treated. When a completely unqualified person got promoted to be his manager because that manager had a personal relationship with one of the VPs, that was the last straw; David resigns. It was hard for him to leave the company he worked so hard for, but the minute he was out of there, he felt a huge weight lifted off his shoulders.

I read this story from Liz Ryan’s article in Forbes, and it is so reminiscent of so many people experiences in many organizations worldwide. Great employees, who came into the organization with an inspired heart and a spark in their eyes ready to make a difference, got uninspired and demotivated when they soon realized this is not the right environment for anyone to work. It’s quite amazing that many people in management and leadership positions will resonate with creating an environment of fear to get their people to work. I don’t understand it; all the research in the world has proven that fear-based leadership or management does not work; it may in the short term, but the quality of work will be average at best and never sustainable in the long run.

Many leaders fall victim to blaming their staff without looking in the mirror; we are not meeting our projection; it must be the staff; we are underperforming, we need a new team. As a result, all kinds of changes occur without really looking at the root cause of the problem.

People Don't Leave Companies, They Leave Lousy Management, and Great leaders set up shields, according to Lori GolerJanelle GaleBrynn Harrington, and Adam Grant, to protect their employees from toxicity. Passion is contagious, and the more negative energy that drips into the organization's culture, the more dysfunctional the organization will become. The 'quietness' of typically motivated employees is an organizational alarm that leadership needs to recognize as a sign that the culture is becoming or has become toxic. According to Jonathan Mills, this is an excellent indicator that something is amidst, and as a result, the leadership needs to act on it.

The Simple Things Make A Huge Difference and appreciation is one of life's greatest motivators, so when we take the time to let people know that we value them, it inspires them to continue doing even more. That's precisely why gratitude is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving, according to Amy Rees Anderson. There is no doubt that when we say the words "thank you," for example, we make the other person feel important and valued, which helps create a great work environment and improve the self-image of their people.

When the fundamentals of a company are in place (purpose, vision, and values) and everyone is singing from the same hymnbook with the leader leading by example, your organization will find its pulse of existence to become one of the best in the world.
