AS People: behind the scenes with Giulio Morelli, Space System Manager at Apogeo Space

In our third article of the AS People series, we sit down with Giulio Morelli , Space System Manager at Apogeo Space. Giulio plays a crucial role in managing the technical aspects of our satellite missions, from preliminary analysis to operational phases. His work involves coordinating the design, development and integration of systems and components, ensuring that everything runs smoothly both on the ground and in space.

Can you describe your role as Space System Manager at Apogeo Space?

My role as Space System Manager involves overseeing the entire technical area related to our space systems, primarily focusing on satellites. I manage everything from preliminary analyses to operational phases, covering all aspects of the mission. This role requires a broad understanding of various disciplines since it encompasses managing requirements and specifications, coordinating design and development, leading technical teams, and organizing activities related to assembly and integration. Additionally, I am responsible for the setup and maintenance of test facilities and managing missions in terms of launchers and transfer vehicles, verification and launch campaigns, coordination with governmental authorities, satellite tracking, and initial orbital operations.

What are the main responsibilities and challenges of your daily work?

Achieving our mission objectives requires defining and executing diverse activities, each varying in resources, duration, and technical disciplines. Planning and distributing these tasks while assessing their feasibility and priorities is a significant challenge, especially given the complexity and compactness of our systems. Ensuring that all parts work cohesively together is crucial, and this extends beyond just the technical aspects.

As launch dates approach, my responsibilities shift to more hands-on tasks, including handling Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) and managing launch campaigns directly. It’s a dynamic role that requires balancing long-term planning with the immediate needs of launch preparations.

What does managing space systems within a satellite project involve?

Managing space systems is about finding the right balance and compatibility among various components to meet the mission’s requirements. Systems must be able to interface effectively with each other, and any additions or modifications can impact multiple features. Therefore, continuous control and assessment are necessary to ensure that the entire satellite, or even the whole constellation, functions as a cohesive unit.

At Apogeo Space, we pride ourselves on designing our own components and fitting them into extremely compact platforms. Every millimeter counts, and even minor adjustments can make a significant difference. Documentation plays a critical role in this process, as it ensures that all changes and integrations are thoroughly recorded and analyzed.

Through Giulio's insights, we gain a comprehensive view of the complexities involved in managing space systems and the meticulous planning required to ensure successful satellite missions. Stay tuned for more stories from the talented team at Apogeo Space in our AS People series.
