The Oxford English Dictionary states that this phrase originated by way of allusion to the mechanism of penny-in-the-slot machines. The OED's earliest citation of a use of the phrase with the 'now I understand' meaning, is from The Daily Mirror August 1939:
And then the penny dropped, and I saw his meaning!
It is an odd phrase but one which I am hearing on a frequent basis at the moment.
We do get institutionalised after a while. We believe adverts to be facts. We are not sure what is news and what is "fake news". "I hear that his product is great", well who do you hear that from? Usually from the people selling the products. However, with the advent of all media selling, we also have the ability to do due diligence on everything. It is likely that you buy items on websites that have the best reviews. When looking at the reviews you are more likely to look at the bad reviews first and completely skip the 2,3 or 4 out of 5 stars, looking at only the 1 star and the 5 star and making a decision on these reviews alone.
Where am I going with this? I think we are on a verge of a major change in the telecom and IT industry, where the power of the reseller or aggregator will be the most it has ever been. The power of the incumbent and carrier will have been diminished and the speed of change will not rely on regulation but on the quality of service. I feel like I am talking in code at the moment, but I feel I have to not to give the game away however when the penny drops get in touch. I would love to talk to you about it.

7 年The problem with the 5 star reviews is that many of them are sponsored or professional reviewers. Many of the 1 star reviewers have generally misunderstood the product or have an axe to grind over the delivery speed or other irrelevance. Ok sometimes the 1 stars flag up a major product defect. The 4 stars can be a little more realistic, some one who rates it as 2 or 3 stars probably has a more balanced view. Everyone mileage may vary of course :)

7 年Couldn't agree more with this Steve Glaister, customers contact businesses when they already know what they want. They're only decision left generally is who to choose and that's usually made by referral or reading reviews, thus meaning presence in the market and first impressions are essential. You also need to offer everything in one place, to quote a partner referring to an underwhelming experience he'd had - "they sold me a generator without the oil to go in it!"
