Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has issued a cautionary advisory to E-ZPass users regarding a recent phishing scam targeting account holders. The scam involves fraudulent attempts to acquire personal financial information under the guise of settling outstanding toll amounts.
According to Crispin Havener, spokesperson for the PA Turnpike, account holders have reported receiving requests for personal financial details to resolve purportedly overdue toll fees. These requests typically arrive via unsolicited texts or emails purportedly from 'PA Turnpike Services' and emphasize urgent actions needed to address account issues such as late fees and overdue balances.
Similar scams have been reported by toll agencies nationwide, emphasizing the importance of vigilance among E-ZPass users. Recipients of unsolicited messages claiming to be from E-ZPass or other toll agencies are advised against clicking on any provided links.
Havener underscores the deceptive nature of the scam, noting that recipients may be inclined to act hastily out of concern for potential consequences such as late fees or toll charges.
Pennsylvania State Police have been actively involved in raising awareness about phishing scams by sharing examples of scam messages, typically containing references to unpaid balances and deceptive payment links that lead to counterfeit PA Turnpike websites.
Contour has joined these efforts, exemplified by the recent incident where one of our employees received a fraudulent message, seen below.
