Pennsylvania Inheritance Tax and COVID-19

Pennsylvania Inheritance Tax Returns are normally filed and Pennsylvania Inheritance Tax is normally paid at the local county Registers of Wills office. Currently those offices are closed. The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has posted the following on its website. When operations of the Register of Wills offices resume, if a taxpayer files an Inheritance Tax Return or makes a payment and indicates that it was due during the timeframe that the office was closed, it will be dated as received on March 12, 2020. There is no indication how promptly after the offices open that the Tax Return has to be filed or the tax payment has to be made in order to take advantage of this procedure. Prompt action upon resumption of operations should avoid any problems resulting from the closing of the offices and inability to file or pay.
