Is Penetration Testing Worth the Cost?

Is Penetration Testing Worth the Cost?

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," says Ben Franklin's 1736 adage about (surprise!) protecting one's home against economic loss due to fire damage. As businesses weigh the cost vs. benefits of preventive security measures, like penetration (or pen-) testing, the old inventor's words ring wiser and truer than ever. Pen-testing probes IT systems for exploitable vulnerabilities before bad guys can discover them. Business leaders then prioritize which problems to fix and when. Considering the potential financial and reputational loss from a single data breach, the cost of pen-testing may be considered quite reasonable-even more so given that:

  • Most small companies lack any kind of cybersecurity plan
  • 75 to 80 percent of customers resist buying from businesses that have been hacked
  • 60 percent of small firms fold within six months of a breach
