Acknowledging reviewer contributions and demonstrating rigor through Published Peer Review History

Trust in research derives both from the rigor of the research process itself, and the rigor of the editorial and peer review process through which the research has passed. Published peer review puts that evaluative process on display, and at the same time showcases the hard work and value of peer reviewer contributions.

Peer review and integrity

Honoring reviewer contributions

Peer review reports are themselves research documents, requiring analytical skill, expertise, thought, and decision-making skills to produce—not to mention time. Like so many of the other research outputs surfaced through Open Science, making peer reviews a citable part of the scientific record reflects their true value to the scholarly community, and gives credit where credit is due.

Enhancing trust

The opportunity to witness the strength of the peer review process directly through editorial decision letters, reviewer reports, and authors’ responses, inspires trust in research. The impact of peer review is even more visible when Published Peer Review History appears in combination with preprints.

Building toward the future

Published peer reviews serve as examples to younger researchers—resources for teachers and mentors, or accessed and referenced by students directly when they need guidance.
