Peeple App for Rating Human Beings

A new app that promises to let users review individuals has caused controversy before it has even launched.
We've heard it all before, startup hopes to revolutionize the way we socialize online. After a lot of articles about the public outcry of the misunderstood idea, Peeple has got my attention. I'm not ashamed of any idea, whether it has the potential to exploit our online reptuation or not. Of course I would hope that is could have a morally uplifting influence.
Peeple is the ‘Yelp for people’ app your mother warned you about
What if we all had a rating, could this actually result in a positive app for positive people? How would negative ratings and comments give us a sense of realism? Legally, could such an entity exist. No, it would have to strictly be a positivity app. So the alarmist reactions to this are a bit premature. But, you have to be a bit like Miley Cyrus for something like this to take off. Bold, unapologetic and fully aware that even negative attention in the attention economy is good for sales.
The app has caused uproar online, with web users describing it as "creepy" and "terrifying".
What people don't realize with the degrading culture & values of the USA, arguably the role-model for online trends & virtual capitalism, privacy is dead online if you haven't noticed, and by this I mean truly "anything goes". There is nothing inherently wrong with this, it's a reality of the times. I say, bring it on. Maybe such an app can be useful, I do not doubt it could become popular.
If you believe people are inherently good, then they will use tools for good. I don't believe the sum total influence of Facebook has been anything close to a positivity movement, nor do I feel the Instagram model of self-branding is inherently uplifting or empowering. I think the founders of Peeple app, do want to do good. Obviously, they have to add an opt-in, among other things.
Can Rating People turn into a Positivity Movement?
Peeple's founders say they will pre-screen for negative abuse and if done right, this could actually be a positivity app. If only peeple had the sense to team up with Adjicons, colorful adjective icons that truly give a wide range of positive #hashtag-ing flavor. Adjicons on Kwirk, a social media app for teens, number well over 400. With categories like Selfie, travel, pets, social, family, etc. each Adjicon serves a context of complimenting.
We live in the Era of the binary 'Like' and the 5 start rating.
I guess my worry with things like the binary like, or the old school five star rating system is it doesn't really say enough, the data is skewed by the limited interface that no longer is up to date with just how big a deal authenticity is online in 2015. Facebook adding an empathy button and a micro video profile loop, will certainly not change this. If Millennials are the drivers of mobile evolution, why would systems that are no longer authentic remain popular?
So to answer peeple, yes I would be interested in rating fellow human beings. Why? Because social skills and customer service is everything nowadays. If a given company has low emotional intelligence (EI) company wide, it will fail. This has implications for the attention economy we are creating. I've worked for such companies and it's not pretty.
On the peeple app there are no ways to opt-out and no anonymous reviews.
Does that scare you? Are you ready to face up to your true online reputation? Don't worry, this app is likely to launch in such a tame version of its potential self, it certainly won't feel as corrupt as Yelp has become.

9 年??? ???? ??
I don't see how this could be truly kept troll free. It seems like a royally bad idea to openly create a space by which anybody could be willfully defamed by others without their knowledge or consent. How would they be able to validate claims? One troll could tarnish another human they have absolutely no knowledge of or actual interaction for the purposes of profiting from that human's misery. Though the article mentions claims of positivity by the authors, control of that content becomes the ultimate issue. In this case it seems like at best a loosing battle between a handful of folks and millions of persons across the wide internet.
Retired
9 年Individuals with Psychology training or study have commented that the comments and behavior of the 'founders' shows some tendencies of narcissism, sadism, etc. This app seems to be an attack on the world in general by it's creators. The positivity that is claimed is somewhere over the rainbow. There isn't anything positive about demanding that people accept something forced upon them, even if it's done by the Messiahs from D.C.
Moderator for Hire
9 年Some people do need to be told where they've screwed up. Constructive criticism is never bad. I.E. Diane "Tiggs" Migliaccio was an upstanding moderator in Fallen Earth, and she had a great face, well liked by the public. It wasn't all that many years in Fallen Earth before she started making a bad name for herself among it's community, using biased opinion and choosing favorites like a child in order to finalize business decisions on things like bans and account restriction. Just the other day a user within the game claimed that 10$ worth of site marketplace currency from gamersfirst.com was willingly taken from him by Tiggs in exchange for a name change on his character. He was told to contact a Game Master in regards to his name change. On the other hand in this, Tiggs is almost never showing her face actively nor openly within the game, and the same can be said of their other moderators. It's no help to buy a 10$ name change that you want right then on the spot if you gotta wait over 3 days to get it.
