Pedestrian Safety - Back to School

Kids are back in school, and we have the responsibility to make sure they are prepared for the danger. One of those dangers is getting to and from school. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) estimates 8,984?pedestrians?died in?traffic?or non-traffic incidents in 2021. 438 pedestrians between 5 to 19 years old died after being hit by a motor vehicle in 2016. Injuries and deaths often occur during the hours before and after school. Why?

Distracted Walking and Distracted Driving.

Pedestrians may have the right-of-way but only if drivers see them. Staring at a cellphone or talking to a friend, kids often walk in front of cars without being aware.? Just a few simple reminders can reduce the risk.

If your child is walking:

  • Never walk while texting. Pay attention to cars and traffic.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.Do not walk with headphones in both ears.
  • Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk when one is available; if you must walk on the street, face oncoming traffic.
  • Always use crosswalks to cross the street. Drivers expect foot traffic in these areas and are more likely to see pedestrians.
  • Never dart out in front of a car. Drivers often can’t stop in time.?

?

If your child rides a bicycle to school:

  • You may not think it’s “cool” but always wear a helmet. Your head is very important.
  • Wear bright-colored clothing so drivers can easily spot you.
  • Use cross walks where drivers will expect you.
  • When turning use hand signals.

?

If you’re a driver on the road:

  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Do not pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians.
  • Never pass a bus loading or unloading children.
  • Don’t be a distracted driver. Pay attention and look out for pedestrians.
  • Be cautious around schools where kids are likely to be.

?

A few simple precautions can help keep our kids safe. Don’t risk someone’s life (or your own) by being distracted. That text or call can wait. Keep your eyes and your focus on the road when walking, cycling, and driving.
