Pedaling to a Sustainable Future with Philip Buluma

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on one of our incredible employees who truly knows how to embrace the joy of cycling! Meet Philip Buluma , our dedicated and passionate cyclist who inspires us all with his love for two wheels.

Beyond his personal achievements, Phil embodies the values we hold dear as a company. His dedication to physical and mental well-being aligns perfectly with our vision of fostering a supportive and balanced work environment.

Phil, how long have you been cycling, and what initially sparked your interest?

Phil: I have been cycling for a year now. My interest in cycling was innate, it's just that I did not have a good bike. However, a friend of mine who lives in the UK was instrumental in motivating me to get one by sharing his cycling experiences and adventures.

What is your favourite cycling route, and why?

Phil: I cycle along the by-passes in Nairobi, especially the route from Embakasi to Lang’ata, through Prestige Junction, Lenana, Dagoretti, Kinoo, Kikuyu and back to Embakasi. I think this is my favourite route because of the familiarity and the sufficient road shoulder?that I cycle on.

Imagine you could cycle anywhere in the world for World Bicycle Day. Where would you choose to go and why?

Phil: I would like to cycle from Cairo to Cape Town. This is heavily driven by my desire to explore the African Continent on road.

How do you balance your passion for cycling with other aspects of your life, such as work, family, or other hobbies?

Phil: Cycling is my hobby and balancing it with other aspects of my life has been a challenge for me bearing in mind family, work and school. However, I mostly use early Saturday mornings to indulge before the weekend demands come calling.

Have you participated in any cycling events or competitions? If so, could you share a memorable experience?

Phil: Not yet. I am still trying to find a cycling tribe that can help me plug in further.

What are some of the health benefits you’ve experienced from cycling regularly?

Phil: My energy levels are always high on the days preceding my adventures. I also get to mentally process a lot of stuff while cycling and I realise that I am more mentally stable. And, I definitely get to improve my general physical fitness.

Have you ever faced any challenges or obstacles while cycling, and how did you overcome them?

Phil: I got a flat tire once in the middle of nowhere. Coincidentally, that was the day I did not have my repair kit. I was lucky to come across a group of 5 other cyclists who had the tools to repair my bike’s flat tyre. That is how I got 5 more friends! The other challenge that I experience on a regular basis is headwinds especially on flat bear landscapes that do not have windbreakers. This challenge is one that has no other solution other than sticking it out.

An all-smiles Phil out for a cycle

As a cycling enthusiast, what does World Bicycle Day mean to you and how would you like to celebrate this day?

Phil: This day brings awareness to all of us, especially in this (Nairobi) city, that we all deserve to use the road and that every cyclist’s life matters.

In your opinion, what role does cycling play in promoting sustainability and combating climate change, and how does World Bicycle Day contribute to that message?

Phil: Cycling does not use fuel and it burns more fat than a powered treadmill.

How do you plan to continue spreading the love for cycling beyond World Bicycle Day?

Phil: I hope that being seen on the bicycle encourages someone to get on one themselves and spread the joy and fun of cycling.
