Pearl - Story of a never outdated accessory

The pearl symbolizes love in Hindu mythology, perfection in Islamic religious symbolism, purity among Christians ... Its most beautiful ornament, the jewel of pearls has crossed the centuries and historical epochs up to us: the rank of pearls still represents today the quintessence of elegance. Timeless, it adorns our neckline with flattering pearlescent shades and always in subtlety. What is the story of this legendary jewel?

A bit of cinema to start with: when we think of the pearl necklace, we often have in mind a famous photo of Audrey Hepburn from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). A historical image that reflects all the elegance that is attributed to the pearl necklace.

Pearls have their own symbolism, often testifying to women's place in society or her fortune. We even found a Tahitian pearl necklace dating back to 3500 years ... before Christ! This one belonged to a Persian princess and testified of its high social rank. In the Romans, who called them tears of Aphrodite, one bought a pearl a year to each young girl of good family so that it possesses a rank of pearls by his majority. We therefore deduce that the more rows of pearls there are, the more the young lady who wears them has experience in the world. In Venice in the 14th century, only the bride had the right to wear pearls. Then, in the 17th century, the pearls were passed from mother to daughter: the more the necklaces had ranks, the more the jewel had been transmitted from generation to generation! A way to identify the power, wealth and especially the history of a dynasty. 

If we wear pearls today in many ways (Tahitian pearl ring, fancy earrings) we must not forget that the use of pearls in jewelry and fashion is centuries old and has several meanings: Henry VIII had them embroidered on his hats and even required the men of his court to wear real pearl earrings! Pearls have never aged, they always illuminate a woman's complexion, whether mounted in costume jewelery or in a magnificent three-row necklace.
