Shopify has launched an advanced AI platform as part of its summer '24 edition release. The update includes enhanced AI capabilities like Shopify Magic for personalised product descriptions, rebuilt analytics for real-time insights, AI-generated suggested replies for customer queries, and upcoming AI image generation features. The Shopify Magic suite of AI tools is free for all merchants, aiming to help businesses grow and connect with customers more effectively. (RetailWeek)

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reports that shop price inflation has slowed to 2.9% in June, down from 5.7% in May. This marks the lowest rate since March 2022. Food inflation decreased to 7.6%, while non-food inflation dropped to 0.1%. Retailers' efforts to lower prices, especially in clothing and electrical goods, have contributed to this trend. The BRC emphasises ongoing challenges but notes that investment in pricing is benefiting consumers. (British Retail Consortium)

Indian exports are facing difficulties, with cargo piling up in ports like Colombo and Singapore. About 75% of India's transshipped cargo is handled at ports outside India, and major trade routes connecting India to various destinations are experiencing strain. (The Economic Times)

Eric Kulisch of Freight Waves says the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' annual logistics report is losing relevance and attention. Reasons include pre-briefings reducing live event attendance, easier access to current market data through other sources, and the report merely confirming known information. He adds that the event's format and promotion need reconsideration to maintain its significance. (Freight Waves)

Did you know that László József Biro's invention of the ballpoint pen was inspired by children playing with marbles in a puddle? We discovered this nugget of information on LinkedIn thanks to Alvin Foo, who said that Biro’s chemist brother Gy?rgy and he developed a pen with viscous ink and a freely rotating ball tip, which they patented in 1938. After emigrating to Argentina during World War II, their invention gained popularity through a contract with the British Air Force, eventually leading to the creation of the iconic BIC Cristal pen, which has sold over 100 billion units since 1953.
