Peace is Not a Right - It's Earned

Peace is Not a Right - It's Earned

On a glorious Sydney morning, while paddling with a good friend, Brett Levings, and listening to the closing of an ANZAC service with a group singing "Advance Australia Fair," I couldn't help but contemplate how very fortunate we are to be in this country and experiencing peace. It also reminded me that peace is not a right; humans have found ways to inflict pain on each other and will continue to do so for as long as we have walked the Earth.

I'm grateful to the ANZACs; they earned ours for us, and my generation has certainly seen the best of times earned by others.

So how do we earn peace and prosperity as a country for the next generation?

  1. We could invest and reach mastery in food, water, and energy manufacturing and security.
  2. We could take national security and defence really seriously - peace does not mean naivety.
  3. We could think long term - say 100 years - and dedicate ourselves to nation-building:

? World Leaders in Education and Training - Highly Skilled workforce

? Don’t just abstract riches from our earth - manufacture with them - make stuff.

? Feed our region through innovative agricultural development

? Harmonise with our environment

? Conquer big problems with innovation and resilience - Like building affordable liveable cities.

The ANZAC spirit was made up of incredible fighting qualities, mateship, innovation, ingenuity, and boldness combined with bravery. These qualities post-war turned into amazing Nation Building energies. They knew what we stood for, they knew they had to build and grow, and they did not shy away from tough decisions and hard work. They were proud of who they were as a generation and understood terrible sacrifices to be made to live in peace.

I am in awe of that generation of men and women, let’s honour the legacy they left us by focusing on big problems, working hard to build something for the generations to come, and sacrificing some comfort now by investing with open eyes and long-term thinking in the strategies that keep us in peace.? ?
