Peace, Respect and Justice - What can we do to ensure this outcome for all?
I post often about things occurring in our company and events in the news, and today I am compelled to share my thoughts on the tragic death of George Floyd and the resulting national protests gripping our nation. As I write this, I am sad and angry at the inequities we have witnessed, and yet I am proud to work at a company where my voice can be heard, at a company where people matter and every day we live into our values of respecting and valuing people.
It is an understatement to say that this past week has been painful as the world watched Mr. Floyd beg for his life. No matter who you are, no matter what you believe, our shared humanity makes us feel the family’s pain—and we send our condolences to the family at their loss—and the past few nights, we have been watching the pain, the anger, and hopelessness of people across our country—black, brown, white; male, female; young, old — showing up in national protests and unfortunately, and sadly, violence. It makes you pause and wonder why, and what must be done, what can be done to change this narrative.
It forces you to ask yourself the only question that matters, and that is, “What can I do?” Not what can someone else do, but what can I do to make a difference.
And so as I reflect on this very personal question, I know that I am going to do more -- that I can do more. Perhaps, it is simply listening to others, to understand their views. It’s educating myself on the underlying issues - criminal justice system, poverty, jobs, homelessness, hopelessness; to understand how I can help – how I can get involved with time, and resource. I’m going to be willing to provide perspective and allow others to provide their perspective without judgement. It’s calling out inequities when we see them. Its treating everyone with respect and fairness. It’s getting involved, it’s volunteering - it’s locking arm and arm together to call out wrong and ensure right as we make the world better for everyone.
What will you do to effect change that ensures Peace, Respect and Justice for all?

4 年This Venn Diagram says it all from my perspective. The diagram is from a superior posting by a friend and former Nationwide business associate. It prompted me to make equal “Go Fund Me” donations to the following: (1) Floyd Memorial Fund in Minneapolis (2) Dr. Ali Barbarawi Family Dentistry in Chicago (3) The Minneapolis Police Rebuild and Training fund. My volunteering and advocating efforts will continue to be targeted at local, state and federal level mental health/prison system and systemic racism reforms.
