Peace One Day? Only if it starts at home
I was honoured to be part of the 20th anniversary Peace Day celebrations this year, joining other activists, ambassadors and organisations across the globe to spread the Peace Day message.
More violence takes place in our schools, homes and communities than in war zones. Domestic violence kills more women than any other issue. If there is not peace at home, there will not be peace in our world.
In the UK two women are killed every week by a current or former partner. That figure goes up to three a day in South Africa. In Brazil, police in Brazil receive a report of violence against women every two minutes
The domestic violence epidemic is rooted in cultural and economic inequality. I believe that private sector organisations not only can – but MUST – be a force for good. We can drive positive change.
One of the most powerful things we can do is to raise awareness of gender violence. Silence is complicity. That’s why Avon commissioned these films showing the impact of intimate-partner violence. The films share the stories of three courageous women, like Gemma Evans, from different continents. Whilst difficult to watch, the films are ultimately optimistic, shining a spotlight on how we can create change – one person at a time. Watch the films here.
The private sector also has a critical role in helping to break the cycle of violence by creating more opportunities for women. There’s a strong link between domestic violence and a woman’s economic empowerment and financial independence.
I’m fiercely proud of the role Avon plays in opening up opportunities for women to earn and learn. If a woman can up-skill, gain financial independence, build a network and grow confidence - then she’s more likely to be able to take control of her life and decisions. Just like the women featured in the films.
#PeaceOneDay is a big aspiration. But it starts with individuals. We can all take positive action. Whether you’re a business leader, an activist, a politician, a citizen taking personal decisions or a brave survivor speaking out. It starts with all of us. Every single one of us. And it will take all of us. Let’s do this.
