One of the most prevalent endocrine disorders is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which impacts 6% to 15% of women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS frequently experience irregular periods, acne, trouble getting pregnant, or hirsutism, which is the development of coarse, black hair on the face and chest. In most cases, symptoms start soon after puberty. In those with PCOS, a number of small fluid-filled sacs develop around the ovary's outer edge.
Causes and Risk Factors
What, then, triggers PCOS? Because we do not yet know the precise origin of PCOS and because each patient's presentation is unique, scientists and doctors refer to this issue as a "syndrome" rather than a "disease." We do know that androgens, insulin, and other hormones interact intricately with the ovaries to cause PCOS (including at the level of the brain).
Insulin resistance, the growth of additional follicles on the ovaries, and hormone imbalance can all be caused by these intricate hormone interactions. The pancreas produces more insulin as a result of the body's resistance to this hormone. Poor blood sugar management as a result can lead to several issues, including a high chance of developing diabetes and high cholesterol.
