PCB Recycling: India’s key initiative in e-waste management

#Centref or #Materials for #Electronics #technology (C-MET), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has established a first of its kind Center of Excellence (CoE) on E-waste Management under the PPP model. The facility can recycle up to 100 kg obsolete Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) / day to recover valuable metals like #copper, #silver, and #gold in an #environmentfriendly manner. C-MET has three R&D laboratories located at #Hyderabad, #Pune & #Thrissur focused on diverse areas pertaining to critical electronic materials.

#India generates close to 3.2 million tons per year of electronic waste. Rich in metal content, PCBS are classified as high-value waste comprising #preciousmetals, RareMetals - Battery Recycling for Electromobility and Automotive , and base metals but they also contain some toxic elements causing irreversible damage to the human body and environment. Hence, the acute need for proper recycling.

  • The #CoE on E-waste management has developed recycling tech for all e-waste varieties including spent PCB, Li-Ion Battery, Permanent magnet, and Si-solar cells
  • More importantly, #MeitY has also introduced #SPECS scheme for helping e-waste recycling industries to set up their plants in India instead of having #recycling done abroad
  • The ministry is rightly adopting a circular economy approach to e-waste management, thereby #boostingresource efficiency, #reducing pollution, recovering precious materials, and minimizing health hazards
