Dynamic Strain Sensors and Accelerometers for Structural Testing
Ground vibration testing (GVT) is a critical process in aircraft development, aimed at gathering experimental data to validate and update structural dynamic models for predicting behaviors like flutter. Typically, standard accelerometers are used to identify displacement mode shapes. However, strain sensors, due to their small size and direct stress correlation, are gaining traction in vibration testing. This paper presents results from a GVT campaign on an F-16 aircraft where accelerometers instrumented the full aircraft, while one wing was equipped with piezo strain sensors. The simultaneous processing of both sensors' data, revealing strain and displacement mode shapes, is discussed, along with the advantages of this method.
