PBPC INAUGURAL CONFERENCE, PBPC 2023: CIRCULAR SOLUTIONS, A HUGE SUCCESS!

This week in Washington, D.C., PBPC hosted its first-ever annual conference,?PBPC 2023: Circular Solutions. Running from Monday, Mar. 27, to Wednesday, Mar. 29, 2023, the event featured keynote addresses, panels, and breakout sessions to explore the innovations, business models, and policies influencing the entire lifecycle of bioproducts in support of a more circular economy. Keynote speakers included: USDA Under Secretary for Rural Development Xochitl Torres Small, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, and Assistant Director for Agricultural Sciences, Innovation and Workforce at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Dr. Dominique Carter. FEDERAL AGENCIES RELEASE NEW DOCUMENTS IN RESPONSE TO BIOECONOMY EXECUTIVE ORDER

A number of documents were recently published under the direction of the Biden Administration’s September 2022 Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy.

Bold Goals for U.S. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing: Harnessing Research and Development to Further Societal Goals

Published by The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, this document outlines “a vision for what is possible with the power of biotechnology and biomanufacturing, and R&D needs to achieve this ambitious vision.”?The goals include ambitious targets for the shift to biobased chemicals, plastics, and materials.

U.S. Department of Defense Biomanufacturing Strategy

This document outlines the guiding principles of the Department of Defense’s biomanufacturing strategy, including an additional $1.2 billion investment for biomanufacturing. The DOD also published a?Request for Information?from industry on biomanufactured products and process capabilities that could address defense needs with responses requested by Apr. 19.

Developing a National Measure of the Economic Contributions of the Bioeconomy

Published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, this report assesses the feasibility of measuring the bioeconomy’s economic contributions.


DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ANNOUNCES NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES ENCOURAGING UTILIZATION OF AGILE BIOFOUNDRY (ABF) CAPABILITIES

The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO)-funded Agile BioFoundry (ABF) consortium has announced a new funding opportunity for organizations looking to utilize ABF capabilities. The funding opportunity provides resources to organizations seeking to conduct research on “developing novel microbial hosts, augmenting titer, rate, and yield of bioproducts, and creating new capabilities & approaches to improve the Design-Build-Test-Learn biomanufacturing cycle.” For more information on the kinds of proposals accepted and the full submission process, please visit the?Agile BioFoundry website.
