PBFJ Certified Novice Reviewer Program [CNRP]
Novice and early career researchers suffer from many obstacles ... one of which is: "how do I get known by editors?" Most editors are reluctanct to try out "newbie" reviewers ... e.g., for reasons of quality control and a feeling that, due to mamoth everyday workloads, it is beyond an editor's remit to provide any serious form of "on-the-job" training for fledgling reviewers (absent a strong recommendation from a trusted colleague).
In a brand new pilot initiative, the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal (PBFJ), through the CNRP, offers novice researchers a pathway to gaining visibility, credibility and experience as a reviewer at the Pacific-Basin Finance Journal.
For full details, see the SSRN Working Paper: "Introducing a “Certified Novice Reviewer Program” … a new initiative at PBFJ" ... click here to access
This program is briefly described below ...
Expression of Interest (EoI). To initiate the process, interested novice reviewers should email me ([email protected]) a 1-page EoI, stating:
(a) Your name
(b) Your researcher status (eg PhD student (year-stage), PostDoc, Assistant Professor, ...)
(c) Your university affiliation
(d) Your prior reviewer experience
(e) A list of your Top 3 reserch outputs (refereed publications, working papers, conference papers, ...).
(f) The name, rank and affiliation of your PhD advisor or research mentor.
After this, all going well, you will be invited to take part in the CNRP. The CNRP involves 3 steps to acheive novice reviewer certification at PBFJ:
Step 1: Novice reviewers need to sign up to the “InSPiR2eS” research network ($free) – to learn about this network and sign up follow the link below:
… scroll to the bottom of the page, until you see the message “Become an InSPiR2eS Member” as highlighted in yellow in the screenshot below …
... OR simply sign up here: https://bit.ly/3N0pz0o
The underlying logic for joining this research network is to increase the chances of you having ongoing and real connections to a research community of relevance to the PBFJ.

To complete Step 1, you need to send an email confirming that you have signed up to the network. [you should send your email to me at: [email protected]]
Step 2: Next you need to enrol in and complete a free micro-credential course [MC] called “Pitching Research Matters”.
The underlying logic behind asking you to complete this MC is that this MC outlines a universal framework that fruitfully informs the typical mindset that I want my reviewers to bring to the task of executing a PBFJ review. Please follow the link below for information about this course and how to enrol:
To complete Step 2, you need to send me a copy of the official Certificate of Achievement that you receive from Bond University upon successful completion of the MC. [you should send this email to me at: [email protected]]
Step 3: Soon after completing Step 2, I will invite you by email to perform a voluntary “shadow” review of a PBFJ manuscript compatible with your research expertise/interests, that currently is being (or has been) formally and independently reviewed by an experienced researcher. Then:
Upon successful completion of the above 3 steps to my satisfaction (in my role as Editor-in-Chief of PBFJ), your name will be added to a pool of "certified novice reviewers" for PBFJ – a list that I will maintain and consult over time.
