Payroll Nerds Forever!

Like many of you reading this I recently decided to change jobs. 

In the course of looking for a new company, I interviewed for a leadership role at another People Services business and the feedback was that I was “too payroll” and not therefore suitable. Initially I was disappointed, taking this as criticism that I was somehow limited. 

Reflecting on this, I now realise that this was a great compliment. 

Payroll people do exhibit fantastic attributes that any business would value greatly in their employees. Among numerous others, are a commitment to continual learning, to always delivering excellence to their internal and external customers, in taking ownership (often working extra hours) against strict deadlines to ensure that the sacred employment contract between employer and employee is honoured. They do all of this for us routinely, without expecting recognition. A very special group of people indeed. 

Payroll is the heart of every business. Compliance with regulation is assumed. For me it is also clear that payroll underpins critical business objectives like employee satisfaction and engagement and that it provides essential financial insights to allow organisations to make the best informed decisions. 

Today, after having been introduced to the leadership of Intelligo Software, liking what I saw and accepting the challenge they offered me. I find myself surrounded everyday by like-minded dedicated people. A business with a positive, can do culture that comes straight from self-confessed payroll nerd owners. Intelligo has a simple single focus which is to enable payroll professionals across the UK and Ireland to be their best selves.

It felt like the opportune moment to take time here to celebrate this profession and the people in it. 

So here is my big shout out and THANK YOU to all of you other wonderful payroll folks, wherever you are!
