Paying it forward during #COVID19

“A person may cause evil to others not only by his actions but by his inaction, and in either case he is justly accountable to them for the injury.” John Stuart Mill
To be clear, personnel in healthcare and essential services are the real heroes in all of this, but many of us can also play a part in minimizing the economic and social impact in our local communities.
When we get this curve flattened - most of us are expecting life to go back to normal and we may have a coffee shop, a restaurant, our gym or a favourite shop that is the first place we plan to go when things are "normal" again. They need our help to try and make sure "normal" is a possibility. Even more importantly, those less fortunate have fewer resources to even think about "normal".
For those of us fortunate enough to work from home or have our employers pay us during social distancing or self-isolation or illness - we can #payitforward to the not for profits and the businesses in our communities.
We can support the not for profit groups who are tirelessly serving those less fortunate like the homeless and those with extremely limited income through:
? donating food to the food bank (not expired soup!),
? donating clothing and clean blankets to the homeless shelters
? donating actual dollars
There are small and large business in our communities who are doing right by the community and by their employees. They are closing their doors while still paying their employees even though the business will have diminished revenue coming or zero in some cases.
We can support these businesses and the empathic leadership they are demonstrating in the community and to their employees through:
? online purchases
? buying a gift card, or calling them and buying a credit over the phone for a future date
? buying and distributing grocery gift cards for their staff (especially in the restaurant industry where tips make up a substantial portion of total wages)
? promoting those businesses who are doing right by the community and right by their employees on social media and through word of mouth in our circles #EmpathicEmployersRegistry
While we may not be able to stop a global market tumble, many of us can do things locally to make a difference. Make a list – where do you love to go? Call them – find out what would help most. Call the food bank or the homeless shelter and find out what they need most.
