Pay yourself
Why would you even think about putting any attention to any activity that doesn't immediately improve your stance? Everyone should live up to their own expectations and swing for the fences in my book.
I started a company so I could hang out with likeminded creative people, it is number one for me. Getting them working on projects is number two and having them contribute to a culture or a tribe, or even a community that may one day help bring forth a new generation of creative thinkers in my little town of Miramichi, well that's number three.
Now, number four is for me not to forget that I've been working very, very hard for nearly 20 years to get myself and my company into a healthy state. I've buckled down, snagged the reigns with people I trust, I'm measuring, I'm taking risks, I'm winning projects and assembling teams of creative folks for productions stemming from all over the world. We are getting shit done! More so than ever before!
I've hired a lot of help, so that I may delegate. They in turn have hired people they feel comfortable delegating to, I never tell anyone how to do their job, I don't have to, they know and they do it well. I am extremely picky on who I let into my circle, as I simply do not have the time to mess around with people who just don't get results.
I delegate tasks, hell I'll delegate entire projects if I think the person can handle it. These types of artists are incredibly organized. I only put the most focused, organized and exceptional multitasking artists into positions to lead other artists. I'm blessed here, I've found some real gems in my day, but I've also kissed a lot of fuckin' toads too.
Now with all this being said, remember, if you find yourself at the helm, never forget to pay yourself for your hard work and for the opportunities and value you create for others.
After all it wouldn't exist without you and if all goes to shit, well you're on the hook, nobody else.
For those that do not sit in the driver's seat, but see your leader/owner/CEO/Founder give themselves a little or even a lot of benefit, cash, fancy car or whatever. You should cheer them on, especially if they fuckin work themselves to death for it. As it should signify that things are on the up at the company. Smart people only spend money typically when there's enough of it after all. Hell, maybe if you're in a key position of trust, that person may allow you the same perks someday too.
So support your leaders if you believe in them, if you don't believe them, well you're at the wrong damn company.
Just my two cents.
