Our Pay Our Respects to Australian Murdered Women of 2024 took place on the Steps of Parliament House yesterday where we honoured 87 women murdered through gendered, domestic, family and sexual violence in 2024.
It was our 7th year of holding the event, and it was with heavy hearts that we faced the grim reality that in 2024 we have seen a significant increase in the number of women killed - from 71 to 87. This is a powerful and confronting event for all, and it brings together people with lived experience, those working in domestic and family violence services, parliamentarians, community and business leaders, those from women's groups, families and many others passionate about this National Crisis.
We were privileged to have Commissioner Micaela Cronin attend and to provide opening remarks, prior to our individual honouring of each woman killed.
We would like to thank 9News Adelaide for their coverage as the lead article on last night's news:
As Co-founders of the event, Gillian Lewis and Stacey Nelan thank all involved - the Women who held the silhouettes, all who attended, our carers and Mike McCarthy who is an important part of the team.
