Paving My Way to College: NEACOL Empowering Colombian Youth in Massachusetts

October 2024

By Delia Visbal

In this edition of our bi-weekly newsletter, we shine a spotlight on Paving My Way to College, a new program launched in September 2024 that aims to guide Colombian youth in Massachusetts through their journey toward higher education. Developed in collaboration with the Consulate of Colombia in Boston and ConEducación Corp., this initiative is supported by NEACOL to empower students from immigrant and minority backgrounds.

The Challenge

For many young people, especially those in minority and immigrant communities, navigating the path to higher education can be daunting. At just 18 years old, we’re often asked to make life-changing decisions with little guidance. This is even more challenging for first-generation college students, whose parents, unfamiliar with the American education system, may struggle to provide support while they focus on surviving in a new country. Without the tools or resources to explore higher education, many youth feel lost when considering their future academic and career paths.

Delivering a Supportive Solution: Paving My Way to College

To address this challenge, Paving My Way to College is offering ten workshops from October to December. These sessions are designed to help students reflect on their strengths, interests, and professional aspirations while providing practical tools to build an academic future. Each workshop will be led by professionals with experience in psychology and vocational guidance, tailored specifically to the unique needs of young people transitioning to higher education.

Some of the highlights of the program include:

  • Vocational Guidance and Self-Discovery: Workshops like “Who Am I?” and “What Interests Me?” will help students explore their passions and develop an academic life project.
  • Practical Experience: Students will visit real workspaces to gain a sense of professional life in different fields, giving them a tangible understanding of various careers.
  • Family Involvement: The program also includes two virtual sessions with students' families, ensuring that parents understand the importance of higher education and are equipped to support their children.

Why This Program Matters

At its core, Paving My Way to College recognizes that most of us don’t know what we want to do with our lives at 18, and that’s okay. But without the right guidance, the decisions we make at this age can have a lasting impact. Many minority youth, especially those from immigrant families, are the first in their families to attend college, and this can feel overwhelming without the right support. This program provides the tools and mentorship these students need to make informed choices about their education and their future.

By connecting students with professionals who have relatable life stories and guiding them through the intricacies of higher education and financial aid, this program aims to break down the barriers that often hold minority youth back.

Impact and Sustainability

This program is more than just a series of workshops—it’s a life-changing experience for students who may have never considered themselves capable of pursuing higher education. By fostering self-empowerment and providing a clear roadmap to college, Paving My Way to College helps students not only see themselves as future college students but also equips them with the skills to make that dream a reality.

Through the final workshop in December, titled Building with Family, the program will celebrate the progress students have made alongside their families, reinforcing the idea that education is a shared journey.
