Why Making Time for Yourself Matters

The holidays bring joy, connection, and celebrations, but they can also bring stress, long to-do lists, and endless obligations.

For professionals balancing work, holiday shopping, and social commitments, it's easy to find yourself lost in the whirlwind. But here’s the truth: taking care of yourself is not indulgent, it’s essential for personal well-being and effective teamwork.

When we carve out time to reset and recharge, we show up for our colleagues, clients, and loved ones with greater clarity, creativity, and energy. As leaders or team members, your ability to remain calm and focused during chaotic times will help to set the tone for those around you.


Three Simple Ways to Prioritize Yourself

  1. Schedule “Me Time” into Your Calendar: Block off small chunks of time in your daily calendar to pause. Whether it’s 15 minutes to sit with a cup of tea or an hour to enjoy your favourite hobby, giving yourself these moments helps reduce stress and can help to prevent burnout.
  2. Set Realistic Expectations: You can’t do everything - nor should you feel you have to. Be selective about holiday parties and shopping lists, by focusing on what brings you joy. Delegate tasks at work and home where possible, and don’t hesitate to say “no” when necessary.
  3. Create Small Moments of Presence: Pause during your busy day to reconnect with yourself. I love going on walks, stopping what I'm doing to look outside at the birds, the sun, or the snow falling, and taking slow, deep breaths. These small acts of mindfulness ground me and remind me to focus on what matters the most.

Self-care doesn’t just benefit you, it positively impacts your entire team. When you prioritize your well-being, you inspire others to do the same, creating a healthier, more productive workplace environment. Teams will always function best when individuals feel valued and energized.


My Personal Experience

As someone who speaks on self-care and mindfulness, it is possible to find balance - even during the busiest seasons. Walking outdoors or pausing to take a few deep breaths has been my way of releasing stress and grounding myself in the present moment. These simple acts remind me that taking care of myself is an investment in my ability to serve others; whether in life, work, or on stage.
