As a coach and a homeopath I spend a lot of time listening to others. I hear the deep stirring of emotions often before the penny drops in the client's own mind, you see listening is a skill that I am so blessed to have. As therapists we hear what you say, we hear the pauses we hear the silences and we hear the resistance. I expect a lot of you reading this can resonate with that. We listen, we process, we reflect.
Thinking to me is just as important is doing. The process of stillness, contemplating, mulling it over, whatever you want to call it, is for me one of the blessings that will come out of lockdown. When I am asked what I did, I will say that I really enjoyed the stopping and pausing to reflect. Because it is in these moments of stillness and silence that the world listens to what we need and we are so very often rewarded by allowing the universe to flow in its own sweet way rather than pushing square pegs into round holes.
In my practice room (over zoom!) I am listening to lots of cases of frustration right now. Moods are heightened, freedom is under constraint and many of us are aching to get out and get on. This is manifesting in many ways, but anger, irritability and a resurgence of old symptoms come to the fore for many of us in these moments of trying to get on and do what we just cannot do.
It is time for us to pause and to reflect. How are we feeling? How are our bodies responding to the spectrum of emotions we are holding on to right now? If you are a practising therapist, and I work with many right now, how are you feeling with this change in income or in the way in which you work? Does this still point feel like stagnation in anyway?
I have created a set of reflective questions for you to think through in your own time. A mini-health audit for you to give yourself the time to think about you and how you are feeling.
Hold space for yourself and honour how you are feeling, don't just throw it on the to-do pile, but stop, pause and then reflect on the most precious asset you have right now; your wellbeing. And if you are one of the therapists and healers reading this remember we want this to be a time of evolution, the world is going to need us once lockdown is lifted. And for those of you in other work - think about what you will be going back to and how you feel about your work, your emotions around work are just as important as your physical symptoms.
