Patterns of Overthinking & its remedies.

Overthinking is not the same as healthy problem-solving. Problem-solving implies considering a challenging scenario when required. Overthinking, on the other side, involves focusing on the problem.

While everyone overthinks circumstances now and again, some people are constantly swamped with thoughts. Overthinking is a thought pattern in which your thoughts and anxieties revolve in an infinite cycle and typically entails dwelling on the past and worrying about the future.

Even though people of all ages, genders, and personality types may battle with the patterns of overthinking, those who are driven by success may be more prone to overthinking. Perfectionists and overachievers tend to overthink because they are afraid of failure and feel the need to be flawless.

Overthinking can be an early predictor or symptom of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Some causes of Overthinking?

  • Observational Learnings from parents?
  • Illusion of being in control
  • Stress
  • Striving for perfection
  • Fear of conflict, failure, etc.

Few symptoms of overthinking?

  • Dwelling on past events or situations
  • Constant worry and apprehension
  • Imagining the worst result
  • Spending time pondering on others opinion and comments?
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Feeling tired or drained
  • Brooding over past mistakes?
  • Anxiety?
  • Intolerance of uncertainty
  • Focusing on things outside one’s control
  • Questioning but never making a choice or taking action

What to do when overthinking hits?

  1. Set a deadline for task completion or taking decisions
  2. Consider taking breaks when the decision-making process becomes overwhelming.
  3. Take action on the things you can control and let go of the things you can't
  4. Be aware of our thoughts
  5. Practice meditation, yoga and exercise regularly
  6. Organise daily life?
  7. Set achievable goals.

Finally, getting counselling is advised if overthinking is really distressing or causing significant damage. Therapists are trained to focus on the source of the tendency, help you cope with it, and gradually eliminate it.?
