Is 'Patterns' different from 'rules'?

Judy Thompson advocates teaching 'Patterns' rather than grammar 'Rules'. I wonder what the difference is? any idea?


Yes. Patterns are rules that are always true. If you find yourself saying “This is the rule and these are the exceptions…” That isn’t a rule or a pattern, it's socially entrenched misinformation and human brains can’t retain that level of detail in the flow of conversation.
