Patient safety solutions: in good hands with next gen!
I am deeply grateful to Ariana Longley, MPH and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation for the incredible opportunity they provided me to serve as a mentor and judge for the 24-hour student hackathon, CatHacks X, at The University of Kentucky, with the purpose of engaging the next generation in building tech-enabled solutions to improve patient safety.
It was a joy to work with around 39 students, each dedicating their bright minds and big hearts to making healthcare safer. I am in awe of their innovative solutions and wish I could share all the results, not just the first and second place teams. They were all winners in my eyes!
?MediCheck took 1st place for its simple and intuitive app that adds another layer of safety to medication orders and meds withdrawn from Pyxis systems. I don’t know if the students are aware of the Swiss Cheese Model of health care, but clearly, their solution has the potential to close up a big hole and save lives. I encourage you to see the team’s elegant app here: https://devpost.com/software/medicheck-ez0d9i.
In 2nd place, Dave, the Passive Medical Assistant, puts real-time 2nd opinions in patients’ hands. Open the app during conversations with your doctor: it will chime in when it detects missing information, a possible alternative diagnosis, treatment options, or other vital details. It can also help clinicians, offering them instant information to queries. ?(“Dave” even speaks Spanish.) Prepare to be fascinated! https://devpost.com/software/dave-the-passive-medical-assistant.

11 个月I commented on the article but want to thank you here too Karen Curtiss, BCPA. I can't imagine that the projects would have been so good without your help educating and inspiring them! Big hugs!
