Patient Awareness Notice: Important Information About Azithromycin Use

Azithromycin is a widely prescribed antibiotic for bacterial infections. While it is generally safe when used as directed, it’s important to be aware of some uncommon or unexpected side effects that may occur:

  1. Heart Health: Azithromycin can affect the heart's electrical activity, potentially leading to arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) in some individuals, particularly those with a history of heart conditions. If you experience chest pain or notice unusual palpitations, seek medical attention immediately.
  2. Hearing Changes: In rare cases, azithromycin may cause temporary hearing issues, such as ringing in the ears or mild hearing loss. This is usually reversible after stopping the medication but should be reported to your doctor if it occurs.
  3. Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Mild stomach upset is common, but severe diarrhea or intense cramping could indicate a more serious condition called Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). Contact your healthcare provider if severe diarrhea persists or worsens.
  4. Allergic Reactions and Skin Sensitivity: Some people may experience allergic reactions, such as rashes or itching, and, rarely, photosensitivity, causing increased sensitivity to sunlight. Using sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors is advised.
  5. Liver and Kidney Function: Though rare, azithromycin can impact liver and kidney function. Symptoms like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue should be reported to your healthcare provider.

Important Reminder: Never stop or change your dose of azithromycin without consulting your doctor. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, contact a healthcare provider right away. Staying informed helps ensure the safest and most effective treatment.

Stay safe and be well.
