Patience!

Patience!

Recently, I found myself battling a relentless sinus congestion after returning from a brief trip out of town. Though COVID tests returned negative, I felt it prudent to avoid potentially spreading anything, and thus, I regretfully withdrew from a key business conference.

In such scenarios, two phenomena typically unfold:

  • First, we become our own doctors. Naturally, we must exercise caution to ensure our ailment is not more sinister than it appears, consulting with healthcare experts if it worsens. Our self-assessment often leads to applying the tried-and-true remedies that have proven effective in our own experiences.
  • Second, our acquaintances suddenly become health gurus. They eagerly offer their unique treatments for my specific condition. Interestingly, their suggestions are as diverse as they are, and none of them are medical specialists. While their remedies might be well-intentioned, they often seem no more than wishful thinking. Yet, I appreciate their genuine concern and willingness to share what has worked for them.

What this experience reinforced was the warmth and compassion my friends possess. Their support was a comforting balm during my discomfort.

For me, the answer lay in over-the-counter cold and sinus medicine and, most importantly, patience. The medication tackled the symptoms as it always has, but true healing required time. After a laborious four days of sniffling and coughing, my body eventually overcame the illness. By the fifth day, I felt renewed, without the need for pills.

My journey with this illness made me long for a quick resolution. I soon recognized that immediate recovery wasn't feasible, and thus, I embraced patience.

As someone transitioning from a tech expert to a professional "speaker," patience has often escaped me. I've desired instant success, constantly longing to be on stage. However, reality has taught me that nothing occurs instantly. Except maybe ordering ice cream!

Currently, I'm laying the groundwork for my speaking career, investing both time and resources. These efforts will undoubtedly pay dividends in the future. But they demand patience, focus, and acceptance of the journey. I've learned to refrain from self-criticism and to embrace the adventure with enthusiasm.

My patience is indeed bearing fruit, and the results are manifesting with each new day.
