A Pathway to Resilience

A Pathway to Resilience

In my ongoing exploration of resilience as a key strength in leadership, I had a powerful realisation during a recent conversation with my coach, Veronica.?

The ability to naturally embrace acceptance, especially in the face of life’s challenges, is a rare and valuable strength.

Understanding Acceptance in Resilience

In the context of resilience, acceptance means recognising and coming to terms with challenging circumstances rather than resisting or denying them.?

This doesn’t imply giving up or being passive; instead, it’s about acknowledging the reality of a situation so that you can focus on responding constructively.

When we practice acceptance, we become better equipped to adapt to adversity—a vital component of resilience. This mindset allows us to conserve emotional energy, reduce stress, and find constructive solutions.?

Acceptance fosters flexibility and emotional strength, enabling us to face challenges head-on.

Your self-talk plays a crucial role in this process. It can either empower you or undermine your resilience.

For instance, when facing adversity, instead of saying, “Why me?” try asking,?

How can I grow from this?

This shift in perspective turns obstacles into stepping stones and failures into growth opportunities.

My Journey

Throughout my life, I’ve encountered several pivotal moments that required me to embrace acceptance.?

One of the most profound experiences was when my son Yousef was diagnosed with cancer. In that difficult time, I realised that resisting or denying reality only drained my energy. Instead, I focused on accepting what was before me, allowing space for hope and resilience.

Another significant moment was leaving my corporate job after 15 years. Despite consistently performing well and meeting targets, a new management team reshaped the organisation, and I no longer fit into the new structure.?

Rather than fighting against a situation I couldn’t control, I accepted it.

I didn’t know what the future held, but by releasing the need to control every outcome, I allowed myself to move forward with ease, eventually uncovering new opportunities.

The Role of Coaching

During my conversation with Veronica, it became clear that acceptance is not just a concept I practice but an inherent strength I possess.?

I want to express my deep gratitude to my coach, Veronica Safoa Owusu , for helping me uncover a powerful insight that has been instrumental in my growth,? the strength of acceptance.?

Through our conversations, I realised that accepting what we cannot control doesn’t mean surrendering. It means making space for hope, resilience, and constructive action.

Her coaching has been instrumental in helping me uncover these insights, demonstrating the immense value of having a coach in one’s journey.

Coaching offers a supportive space for reflection and growth, empowering individuals to embrace acceptance and navigate challenges with resilience.

I totally agree with you that accepting reality when it comes doesn't mean giving up. As you said, this acceptance frees up our energy to be more present in the things we can really influence. There are often moments of helplessness in life, such as when I encountered a change at work that was beyond my control, choosing to accept it instead made me more equipped to deal with the challenge. Acceptance is therefore a source of strength that allows us to find a new way out of difficult situations and move on with grace and determination.
