Creating A Virtuous Circle Of Investment In Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA's Senior Vice President Sustainability & Chief Economist, goes through the challenging financial conditions that sustainable aviation fuels face in the journey to #FlyNetZero.

She calls on governments to eliminate their support to fossil fuels and provide a level playing field that gives equal chances to all forms of energy:

?“To accelerate the reallocation of capital in favor of renewable energy, it is necessary to increase the risks and limit the returns associated with fossil energy. To do this, it is important for governments to eliminate their support for this sector, at least reaching a level playing field that gives equal chances to all forms of energy.”

World Bank data show that global unemployment rates have been decreasing steadily since the spike that accompanied the COVID-19 crisis and are now below their pre-pandemic levels

Chart of the Week: Strong Global Labor Market Is Both Good And Bad For Airlines

Data from The World Bank show that global unemployment rates have been decreasing steadily since the spike that accompanied the COVID-19 crisis and are now below their pre-pandemic levels.

In fact, the unemployment rate in advanced economies remains close to historic lows (4.5% as of mid-2023).

Low unemployment rates mean that more people have jobs today than ever before, earning steady incomes and supporting air transport demand.

Meanwhile, staff and skill shortages have become more widespread and apparent in the post-pandemic world. Challenges with recruitment have been reported across the aviation value chain.

While airlines’ financial performance is improving from the historic losses recorded during the pandemic, the industry is facing headwinds across a number of cost categories, the two most important of which are fuel and labor.
