The Path to Holistic Data Governance

While working on the movie Toy Story 2, Oren Jacob, Pixar's CTO, and Technical Director Galyn Susman encountered a major issue, a directory containing assets for several characters showed an error message, indicating its invalidity. As they attempted to trace back the problem, they witnessed assets for multiple characters vanish before their eyes. This was due to an erroneous 10 character command that mistakenly deleted 90% of the movie.

In this example even though sensitive data wasn't leaked or lost, a significant amount of data was still accidentally deleted, some of which could never be recovered.

This underscores the importance of governance program for not only how you will treat sensitive data in terms of where or how long you retain it and whether or not you delete it but also extending such measures to encompass various classes and categories of data essential for backup.

While a Loss of data may not result in a breach in compliance, it could certainly result in other catastrophic business consequences that, if planned for, will hopefully not happen to you.
