If industrial development has been the greatest advancement made by humankind, the next big challenge is to keep powering it, while also focussing on reducing carbon emissions so as to not damage the environment irreversibly. The realization has been late, though with the alarming increase in global emissions, climate change, a decline in biodiversity, and recurring natural disasters. The climate emergency is currently one of the most critical issues, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (Paris Climate Agreement) as the goal.

The United Nations mention ‘2022 as the year for climate action’ and rightly so when countries around the globe are starting to take actions and making policy decisions to alleviate the environmental damage that has been done. There is an increased focus on renewable energy innovation and finding new solutions to create a sustainable energy ecosystem.

In India, the energy demand is increasing at a tremendous pace. Considering the rapid economic growth here, the electricity consumption is projected to reach 15,280 TWh (Terawatt Hour) in 2040. On the other hand, the industrial sectors – steel, cement, transport, significantly contribute to India’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The key is to strike a balance between meeting the energy demand and controlling the emissions. India is aggressively working towards achieving the 500-gigawatt (GW) Renewable Energy capacity and 50% clean energy share from non-fossil fuels by 2030.

Channelizing the POWER of the Mighty Sun

India is bestowed with plenty of sun exposure due to its geographical location, tropical and sub-tropical. With 5,000 trillion kWh annual solar radiation with most land areas receiving 4-7 kWh per sq. m per day, there is a huge potential for it to be tapped through better infrastructure.

Tata Power-DDL is constantly pushing solar power generation through rooftop solar plants for its consumers in its licensed area. 1700+ such plants have been installed with a total capacity of 47.5 MWp and has resulted in the generation of nearly 100 MUs so far. The company offers solutions tailored to customers' needs ranging from a few KW to multiple MWs along with site surveys and installation to commissioning. The customers also get the benefit of 25 years serviceability on the installations with optional annual maintenance charges (AMC) including cleaning and a Comprehensive Warranty for solar plant - 5, 7, or 10 years, making it worth going for.

Driving the Green - EVs

Supporting the Delhi Government to #SwitchDelhi, Tata Power Delhi has launched a single-window facility to install private EV charging stations in the national capital. The scheme targets domestic and semi-public sites in the city. To facilitate the easy installation of slow and moderate chargers, the company has empanelled 12 vendors who would ensure the installation and operationalization of these EV chargers within seven working days of submitting the request by a consumer.

The single window facility can be availed by either visiting Tata Power-DDL’s website or calling Tata Power Delhi Distribution's Sampark Kendra @19124. Consumers can opt for a new electrical connection (including pre-paid meter) to avail reduced EV tariff or can continue with the existing connection. In addition, they can avail subsidy for light EV chargers up to ?6,000 and pay the rest of the amount to the vendor. To make it easier, a monthly subscription payment model is also available for the consumers without paying the entire cost upfront.

Additionally, the company plans to set up 20 more EV charging stations at various locations in Delhi. It also runs battery swap points for 2 and 3 wheelers in North Delhi.

With the growing energy demand and the need for competitive pricing to ensure the availability of affordable power as compared to conventional sources, the scope for developing renewable energy remains strong.
