WIPO’s Intellectual Property and Gender Action Plan (IPGAP)
On account of World IP Day 2023, WIPO conducted the 2023 campaign under the theme “Women and IP: Accelerating innovation and creativity” to address the need to bridge the gender gap in intellectual property activities.
Since the protection of Industrial Designs and Patents plays a key role in measuring different types of innovation activities in the global economy, WIPO has used the involvement of women in the field of Industrial Designs and Patents as a factor to determine the extent of women's participation in IP innovation.
Statistics show that there is a persistent gender gap across innovation measures with a very low representation of women trying to protect their Industrial designs or Patents in various sectors ranging from simple packaging to mobile phones and automotive exteriors.
In an effort to increase women’s participation in IP and innovation, WIPO has included a strategic plan to promote and encourage women’s participation in IP and innovation through the first Intellectual Property and Gender Action Plan (IPGAP). Read more.
In conclusion, this week's IP highlights show the ever-changing landscape of patent applications and industrial design registrations. Equally important is WIPO's spotlight on the significant gender gap in IP, leading to the launch of IPGAP to boost female participation. As we navigate this dynamic field, ensuring inclusivity and equitable representation remains crucial.
