They have some of the most beautiful handcrafted watches and comes as the icon of swiss watch industry. Most of these come at a price range of USD 25000+ or a 20 Lakhs plus. The first time I saw one of these was in 2007, when a senior executive at a company that I worked with and watch collector, showed me a Patek Philippe. It was a rare collector one. May be I really could not digest the investment into it. The interesting part is that Patek Philippe makes only small batches of handcrafted watches and by itself is rare. Many of the old watches get record prices at auctions. So it is worth the collection! It is really a piece of art.

The swiss tradition of watches come from the french refugees. The artisans who came out of the religious trouble in France and settled in Geneva. Geneva prohibited most of the luxury goods and what was left for these artisans to express their skills was watch making. This created the whole industry in Geneva.

As per Wikipedia, The company traces its origins to the mid-19th century, when Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek along with his Czech-born Polish partner Franciszek Czapek formed Patek, Czapek & Cie in Geneva on 1 May 1839 and started manufacturing pocket watches. The two eventually separated due to disagreements and the company was liquidated on 18 April 1845.On 1 May 1845, Czapek founded Czapek & Cie with a new partner, Juliusz Gruzewski. Subsequently, Patek was joined by French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, the inventor of the keyless winding mechanism, and continued the watchmaking business with a new company, Patek & Cie, beginning on 15 May 1845.On 1 January 1851, the company's name was officially changed to Patek, Philippe & Cie.In the same year, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom acquired a keyless pendant watch at the Great Exhibition in London. Patek Philippe also boasts of many inventions in horology.??

Absolutely loving your newsletter Dr. Sandeep Krishnan . Quite interesting and insightful. Every brand has a vanity for which they command the place in the ecosystem, and your articles are bringing those out really well. Btw, when are you gifting me one of these luxury brand items? ?? Just one would do.

my dream watch. they make only 50000 watches a year and the demand for their PP Nautilus is so high that actually its an investment. How they are able to get so much demand for their watches is still a mystery. only four watch brands have occupied the 95% of the luxury watch market. they are Richard Mille, PateK, AP and Rolex in chronological order.
