In 2017, I met Pastor Ezekiel Aseka Ayuku in Nairobi, and saw the faith work he has dedicated his life to, in the Mathare slum near there. I'm very glad for him that this very well-made short documentary (https://vimeo.com/848789176?share=copy ) was produced about the Center of Hope and Transformation and its ministry, which he shares in both Mathare and Butere.
In a secular language, I can attest to the the transformative material impact of his work in these communities troubled by food scarcity, desertification, unemployment, devastating pandemic health impacts, and now, inflation.?This center has developed schools, meal programs, a library, sports, music and jobs training, as well as church services and counseling.?
What may get lost in secular translation is just how deeply?Pastor Ezekiel's life?has been transformed by the felt truth of this Christian faith, in this place of the world, so rich in communal songs, images, energies and intuitions. As he remarks in the film, there's much we can?learn from places like Mathare, where people, whom we may consider materially very poor,?live very close to the earth?and paradoxically, to spirit as well.??
