Passive Harmonic Filter

A Passive Harmonic Filter is a parallel filter which reduces harmonics by absorbing it from downstream load permitting equipment to achieve a full load run. Engineers worldwide, depend on passive harmonic filters when the electric load is sizeable, harmonic distortions are alarming, yet need to slash equipment footprint by designing full load operation. It enhances the plant's 3P, power, productivity and profitability by manifold. We manufacture the most valued passive harmonic filter - type Super Tuned which is a top-end custom-built product.
When you have problems - repetitive failure in process drives, electronics, servers and in electrical equipment or unwanted tripping; It will solve all your problem. Needless to say that it will mitigate harmonics (both voltage and current) to tolerable limits as defined by IEEE-519 standard.
There are few variants of passive harmonic filter though, Series type passive harmonic filter and De-Tuned Filter. The series passive filter introduces an impedance before an individual load that reduces a little current harmonics by the principle of ohm's law. But by doing so, it increases voltage harmonics which could cause trouble if there are sizeable series filters within a transformer. It works OK when a large transformer has only a few non-linear-loads. De-Tuned filters do not mitigate harmonics but improve power-factor (PF). It works fine so long as harmonics are near the borderline of IEEE-519 limits.

4 年Good theory, thanks for share.
28 Years. Thank you for the memories. I have left NEPSI. Looking forward to new challenges and whatever life has in store.
4 年Alex Doll, You are right... filters for grinding mill applications are massive in size, even when metal-enclosed, which takes just 1/3 to 1/4 the area of an open-air filter solution. Below is a picture of two grinding mill filters we designed and manufactured recently. They are a multi-tuned filter system consisting primarily of C-HP and HP type (damped) harmonic filters. Their reliability must be near 100% as often the process plant cannot operate without them. The collage shows the filters being installed. The picture to the far right bottom corners shows how large they can be....

4 年Good to see a quick article on medium-voltage harmonic systems. Nearly all grinding mill variable speed drives are probably going to need a harmonic filtration solution, and almost nobody in mineral processing as much idea what this involves or the foot print size of these systems.

4 年Good input. Tuned filter is load specific, hence it is still a choice against active filter especially in sugar mill/paper mill & cement industry
