I don't know about you, but I always find the start of a new year quite overwhelming. All people talk about is reflection, goal setting or manifestation and it can make you feel guilty for not doing any of those things.?

But, I have some good news for you. It's okay to?ease into the year. It doesn't have to start with a bang and don't feel guilty if it doesn't. We have 12 months (or 361 days now) to accomplish our goals. So sit back, relax and take it slow.?

Why fresh starts are so important.

New year, new you. How many times have we heard that??

The new year, represents a?fresh start.?

A time to cut bad habits and introduce good ones.?

According to Katelyn Bourgoin and her newsletter, Why We Buy,?there's a psychology behind it.?

Katelyn calls it the?Fresh Start Effect.?

This is where?people have more motivation to start a new habit at the beginning of a new time period.

The theory is inspired by Katy Milkman, who writes about specific times of the year when it's easier to change in her book —?How to Change: The Science of Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.?

There are moments in time, like the new year, the beginning of a month, the start of a week or after a birthday or a breakup, where we feel like we can forget about the past and make a fresh start.?

Think about it, how many of us have said something like...?

?? "I'm going to cut out carbs starting Monday"

?? "I'm going to start weightlifting in the New Year"

?? "I'm going to quit smoking after my 30th birthday"

But, how does this relate to marketing?

Let me break it down...

As marketers, we need to leverage 'fresh starts', because they can encourage people to buy.?

If a potential customer is feeling more motivated to smash their goals, they are more likely to buy something to help them achieve those goals.

For instance, if I've promised myself to spend less time on social media in the New Year now is the perfect time to sell me...

??? A software that puts a time limit on my social media apps

?? A new pair of trainers for running to get me outside

?? A book to fill my time?
